Navy Doctor In Love With Military Career
Retired Rear Adm. Felix Pettey Ballenger, a physician who spent more than 30 years in the Navy, ran hospitals around the world.
Ballenger of Longwood, a thoracic surgeon who once served as commanding officer at the Bethesda Medical Center in Maryland, died April 20 of heart disease. He was 85.
After he was drafted in 1942, Ballenger, a recent medical school graduate, was given his choice of service branches. He chose the Navy for a chance to travel and study thoracic surgery, said his daughter, Jane Raymond of Orlando.
He got both wishes and fell in love with his military career, Raymond said.
He rose in the ranks from Navy ship doctor to chief of surgery at well-known naval hospitals such as those in Quantico, Va., and Great Lakes, Ill.
``He was respected and well-liked,'' his daughter said. ``He was a long, tall Texan, and he could tell a good joke.''
In 1965, he was appointed commanding officer and surgeon at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Yokosuka, Japan.
He returned to Washington, D.C., two years later as inspector general for the Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
Ballenger became commanding officer at the Bethesda hospital, known for treating U.S. presidents, in 1969. Before he retired in 1974, he spent a year as president of the Navy Physical Disability Review Board.
He had two cherished hobbies: golf and bonsai, the Japanese art of growing miniature trees.
``He had quite a collection of [miniature) trees,'' his daughter said. ``He was such a good golfer, they called him `Dr. One-Putt.'''
Ballenger also is survived by his wife, Mayme Ballenger of Longwood; son, Charles Curtis Ballenger of Fort Worth, Texas; and daughter, Ann Steffan of Orlando.
He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington.
