  [S213] Miscellaneous Publications, 15 Dec 2009. Hiram H. Segrest During the years of his professional life here Dr. Hiram H. Segrest has won for himself a place of distinction in the dental fraternity in Corpus Christi. After a two years training in Vanderbilt University, he graduated with its class of 1890, and in the same year began the active practice of his profession at Brandywine in his native state of Mississippi, and in 1896 came from there to Corpus Christ. He is also operating largely in lands in Nueces county and owns some of the most valuable property in Corpus Christi. During two years he served this city as a member of aldermen, was for a similar period its mayor pro tem, and being then elected to that office, he served as the city's mayor for another two terms. When he took hold of the city's affairs it was bankrupt, and on his leaving charge it was almost paid up. He is now one of the commissioners of Corpus Christi. He is a supporter of Democratic principles, and he is active and influential in upholding the principles of the party in local and state politics. Dr. Segrest was born in Claiborne county, Mississippi, February 6, 1855, a son of David T. and Martha Leperl (Davis) Segrest, both of whom were also born in that commonwealth. David T. Segrest is yet engaged in agricultural pursuits there, in Copiah county, he having long survived his wife, who died in the year 1857. After a training in the public schools of Copiah county, Hiram H., their son, spent one year at an academy at Hazlehurst, and then after a period spent in farming he became interested in the milling and cotton gin business with his father and continued along those lines for several years, or until matriculating in the dental college. During the years 1886-87 he was one of five commissioners of Claiborne county. In 1878, Dr. Segrest was married to Sallie Margaret Mooney, a daughter of J. F. Mooney, of Claiborne county, and their five living children are: Lucinda Leperl, wife of F. J. Day, of Fort Worth; David A., a graduate of the dental department of Vanderbilt University, and now in practice with his father; Ida May, the wife of Robert G. Decker, of Corpus Christi; and Hiram and Joseph B. Segrest. The wife and mother of these children died in 1898, and in February of 1903, Dr. Segrest wedded Nannie Cleo Sheffield, a daughter of N. A. Sheffield, of Cameron, Texas. The two children of this second union are Martha Sarita and Arthur Spohn. Dr. Segrest is a member of the Corpus Christi Lodge of Masons and of its Perian Chapter, R.A.M., and he is also associated with the Woodmen of the World, with the Knights of Pythias and with the Texas State and Southwestern Dental Association.
