Mary Nell Garrison passed away peacefully at home on September 6, 2008.
Born in Waco, Texas, Mary Nell spent her adult years in Austin where she made an impact on the business and civic communities. After marrying Homer Garrison, Jr. she devoted herself to the family, but found time to be involved in the community. She was the catalyst to begin a number of organizations, She was the founding President of the Women's Symphony League, very active in and President of the Helping Hand Society, a founding director of the Shivers Cancer Center and President of the Seton Development Board. Her husband and son were involved with the Boy Scouts, so she was as well and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for exemplary service.
After her son Homer Garrison III, went to college she decided to enter the business world. In 1965 she founded Mary Nell Garrison Realtors which is now Austin's oldest residential real estate company. She was a force in the business world serving as a director of the Chevy Chase National Bank, The American National Bank, Mercantile Bank and the Austin Chamber of Commerce, Mary Nell was appointed to the Committee for Women in the Armed Forces by President Johnson. Governor Briscoe selected her to serve as a Regent of Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
In recognition of her contributions to so many endeavors she was named Austin's most Worthy Citizen by the Austin Board of Realtors. The Rotary Club of Austin awarded the Community Service Award to her as well.
One of the greatest joys in her life was her Church. She was a member for many years of the First United Methodist Church and served it in many ways. She taught the same Sunday School class for sixty years and the Church honored this service by naming a Chapel for her.
She was an avid reader. For more than fifty years she entertained audiences in Austin with her book reviews, It was hard to tell who enjoyed it more, Mary Nell or her listeners.
Mary Nell is survived by her son, Homer Garrison III and his wife Anne; two grand children, Tiffany Garrison Parker and her husband Rick of Longview, Texas, Monroe Garrison and his wife Alicia of Houston, Texas; and three great-grandsons, Richard Parker, Thomas Garrison and Charles Garrison.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to her loving care givers and to Hospice Austin for the joy and care they brought to her in her final days.

Mary Nell Garrison : Business owner wanted to share success with city
Mary Nell Garrison owned a real estate company, helped found a cancer center and a number of community organizations, and taught Sunday school in Austin for 60 years. Garrison died Saturday at her Austin home. She was 94 .
She didn't have any specific illness, said her son, Homer Garrison III. "She just wore out," he said.
Garrison lived her life with a grace that she carried until the end, her son said. "Up until the day she died, she wore high-heeled shoes," he said.
She will be buried in the Texas State Cemetery in East Austin on Wednesday, joining her husband, Homer Garrison Jr., who was chief of the Texas Rangers and director of the Texas Department of Public Safety . He was buried in 1968 .
In the 1960s, Mary Nell Garrison founded a real estate company that still bears her name. She was the founding president of the Austin Women's Symphony League, a founding director of the Shivers Cancer Center and president of the Seton Development board. She was also a member of the board of directors at several banks, including Chevy Chase Bank and American National Bank.
"She loved this town and watching it grow and change," said her son, a partner in her real estate business. "She was quite a presence in Austin for some time. She wanted to be sure she gave back more than she received."
In the 1960s, President Lyndon Johnson appointed her to the Committee for Women in the Armed Forces, an advisory group for the Defense Department. And Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe selected her in the 1970s as a regent of Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls.
"She was one of my heroes," said Emily Moreland , who owns Moreland Properties in Austin. Moreland said Garrison helped educate her about the Austin market when Moreland was starting out as a real estate agent in the 1970s. "She was a very gracious, giving person even in the business world.
"From what I observed, she was the type that didn't want all credit but just wanted to get an organization going and make it run successfully," Moreland said.
Born in Waco, Garrison got a degree at Texas Woman's University in Denton before moving to Austin in the 1930s and working at the Texas Department of Public Safety, where she met her husband. In the 1940s, she began teaching a Sunday school class called "The Wedding Ring Class" for young married couples at First United Methodist Church of Austin.
"She was a storyteller beyond compare," said Ivan Marks, a member of the class. "She made you feel the emotion of the story."
A room in the church's family life center is named after her, the Rev. John McMullen said .
"She was pretty much the heart and soul of things around here," he said.
Garrison is survived by her son; his wife, Anne; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services are set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca St.
