    2. [S42] America's Obituaries & Death Notices, (NewsBank, Inc.), 21 Feb 2012.
ARLINGTON — It was picture day at Maxie Speer Elementary School.

Third-grade teacher Ruth Ditto noticed that one of her students, a girl from a family without much money, was upset about her appearance. She didn't think she looked nice enough to have her photo taken.

"Ruth called her hairdresser" and summoned a taxi to take the child in for a quick makeover, said Beverly Reynolds, who taught with Mrs. Ditto beginning in the late 1950s. "That little girl came back beaming."

The intervention was typical of Mrs. Ditto, who died Tuesday at 96.

"She could make any disadvantaged child feel worthwhile," said Reynolds, a friend for nearly 50 years. "She kept her classroom so that everybody had a sense of self-worth."

Reynolds wasn't the only one who took note of Mrs. Ditto's dedication to the district's children: Ditto Elementary, which opened in 1977, was named in honor of the 29-year Arlington school district veteran. She also taught at Kooken and Thornton elementary schools.

"This lady was sharp as a tack," said Ditto Principal Janna Graham. "It was just so cool to sit there and listen to this lady laugh. She must have been a piece of work when she was younger, that's all I can tell you."

Graham noted that Mrs. Ditto loved to visit the school.

"You were proud to bring her into the building," Graham said Thursday. "I think she really had a great life."

Her son, Michael Ditto, was a student in his mother's first class of third-graders at Speer.

"She ruled with an iron fist," Michael Ditto said. "I didn't act up much."

But, he said, his mother was a delightful person, firm classroom management notwithstanding. She went on to teach remedial reading, he said.

"She was a heck of a piano player. She didn't read music. She just played by ear," Michael Ditto said. "She loved to travel. She would go anyplace. She went to the Holy Land three or four times. She loved to play bridge. She was always the life of the party."

Mrs. Ditto lived in Arlington for more than 70 years and married into a family with local roots dating to the mid-1880s, but she was not a native. She was born in 1910 in Freestone County, in East Central Texas, where her father was a farmer and the county sheriff.

Ditto's father died when she was still young, leaving his wife to rear three daughters by herself.

Michael Ditto recalled that his mother went to college "wherever she had a relative" to cut costs and met his father when she was running errands for a relative with whom she lived while attending college. Mrs. Ditto eventually graduated from what is now the University of North Texas. She later earned a master's degree from Texas Wesleyan University.

Mrs. Ditto was a member of the auxiliary at Arlington Memorial Hospital, where her husband was the administrator, for more than 30 years.

For years, Mrs. Ditto and Reynolds set aside a day every summer to go to Dallas to shop and eat lunch at the posh Zodiac Room at Neiman Marcus.

"She was one of the funniest people I've known and one of the best friends you could ever have," Reynolds said. "She lived a meaningful life."

Other survivors include three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

      Services

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Arlington. Burial will be at Moore Memorial Gardens.
