Ann P. Cutler, widow of Dr. John L. Cutler, died on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born on November 1, 1934, in Frankfort, KY. She is survived by her three children, a sister, Mary Margaret (Joe) McClain of Austin, TX, and her cherished grandchildren, Rebecca (Becky) Hightower and Steven Hightower.

Ann obtained her Masters Degree in Family Studies at the University of KY and soon began her long and diverse career helping children and families. Her interest in preschool and daycare programs stemmed from her role as a parent in the Bluegrass Cooperative Nursery School. In the 1960's, she began her professional life working as a teacher in and subsequently the Director of the Bluegrass Nursery School and later the Director of the First Presbyterian Daycare Center.

After working in the child care field, she became a Day Care Specialist for the State of Kentucky. She moved on to become a foster care worker in Fayette County. She was devoted to her foster parents and children. She worked in the Ombudsman's Office for the Cabinet for Human Resources. She went on to become the statewide Foster Care Specialist in charge of recruiting foster parents. She was the creator of the successful recruitment campaign “Superman Had Foster Parents.” Her next position was as Co-Director of the Family Resource and Youth Services Center. Then she became an Adoption Specialist and liaison with Kentucky's private adoption agencies. She ended her working career as a specialist with the Special Needs Adoption Program.

The next chapter in her life was with the Kentucky Donovan Program working on a master's degree at UK in the Theater Arts Department. One who loved the theater, she became a teaching assistant. Teaching, always a passion, did not end here. During the last 4 years her heart was captured by adults from other countries whom she taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at Operation Read. She got such pleasure from their eagerness to learn.

Her life has been a series of adventures. She lived in several countries growing up and continued her travels through retirement. Whether it was trekking through Alaska, cruising on the Mediterranean Sea or in the Caribbean, or sailing down the Mississippi or Amazon River, she was always eager to see new sights. She shared special times with her long time friends, Carolyn and Ernest Rhodes and Mildred Deason.

High on Ann's list of interests were politics and sports. Ann was a political junkie and called herself a Yellow Dog Democrat. She served on the Fayette County Democratic Party and last year served as the senior citizen liaison for the Beshear/Abramson campaign. She lived down the street from the FCDP office, and they loved when she would step in for a spirited and informed conversation.

A passionate Kentucky Wildcats fan she looked forward to the football and basketball seasons and to game nights with friends. An avid tennis enthusiastic, her TV was always tuned to the US Open and the British Open.

Ann was a bibliophile, a frequent patron of the Fayette County libraries, and more recently a reader of the library's e-book on her beloved Kindle.

Since childhood she was an ardent movie goer. She especially enjoyed seeing new releases in her longtime favorite venue, the Kentucky Theatre, and looked forward to critiquing the films with Fred Mills, the manager.

Ann had so many interests-knitting, crocheting, remolding and renovating houses, reading house plans, and gardening were just a few of her hobbies. She was a computer and technology geek before it was cool. Her mind was like a computer, she could cite facts and figures on about any subject. She will be greatly missed. Visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday, September 19 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 463 Main Street, Lexington, KY.

In Ann's memory, donations are suggested to: Friends of the Kentucky Theatre, c/o Bluegrass Community Foundation, 250 W Main Street, Ste 1220, Lexington, 40507; Friends of the Lexington Public Library, 140 E Main Street, Lexington, 40507; and Operation Read c/o BCTC Foundation, 164 Opportunity Way, Lexington, KY 40511.
