OZONA Byron C. "Mustard" Williams passed away suddenly Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, out in Crockett County, where he had spent all of his life. Born the youngest son of Charles L. and Bertie Fussell Williams, he came into this world on Nov. 2, 1924, only one day following his own father's death. He joined his widowed mother; four older brothers; and one sister. Life was hard at times during the Depression years that followed, but never dull, with so many siblings and friends to keep him company, and in and out of trouble, as he grew up in Ozona. Mustard loved sports and would run track with the older high school boys. Their coach, Ted White, declared that he "wasn't any bigger than a mustard seed"....and the moniker stuck to him for the remainder of his life. Following high school graduation in 1942, he attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, as well as Texas A&M. Being the youngest son, with all of his four older brothers already in various branches of the service during World War II, they would not draft him - but Mustard would have none of that and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific during the war. After his enlistment, his mother was honored as a 5-Star Mother and all five brothers returned to Ozona after the war to continue their lives. On July 12, 1947, he married Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Gray, in Ozona. She preceded him in death on their wedding anniversary, July 12, 2009. After various business ventures in Crockett County, Mustard began his oil and gas career in 1951, in Midland, Texas. He spent over 30 years driving back and forth from Midland to take care of business and the road must have gotten long at times! He had many business associates in Midland and spent many a night auctioneering at the Four-Man golf tournaments at Ranchland Hills and other country clubs in Midland over the years. He would often take business associates deer hunting and fishing in Ozona during the early and middle years of oil and gas wheeling and dealing. His family knew many of these associates and some became very good friends over time. He loved fishing, hunting and the like. Many happy years were spent with his family on their Devil's River lease, along with many often very cold deer hunting trips! Traveling was a favorite pasttime after he retired from the oil and gas business. Mustard and Liz would travel all over the United States in one of the several motorhomes they had over the years. Mustard was an excellent driver and never had an accident in the motorhome in over 30 years of traveling. He steered out of more than one blowout without overturning. Music was also a favorite and he played guitar. He enjoyed many jam sessions over the years and passed his love of music on to his children. He had an extensive Jimmie Rodgers record collection and never tired of listening to the old music of his childhood. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and all of his older brothers, Charles Williams and his wife, Jonesy, Gene Williams and his wife, Toots, Jack Williams and his wife, Winnie, Joe Williams; and his brother-in-law Joe Clayton. He is survived by two daughters, Connie Burrus of Mountain City, Texas, and Cathy Williams of Farmington, N.M. Also surviving him are his older sister, Mary Clayton; his sister-in-law, Jeanne Williams; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, at Preddy Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at Ozona United Methodist Church with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
